All’s Well That Ends Well (1603-6)
Helena loves Bertram, but it isn’t reciprocated. Meanwhile the King is ill, with no hopes of recovery. Yet Helena’s father was a distinguished doctor, who passed on his skills to her. If she can cure the King, she can have any husband she chooses.
Bertram accepts – but doesn’t consummate – the marriage, and is soon away to Florence to the war.
Helena follows, promised that once she has his ring and his child, she’ll be his wife. With Diana’s help she returns to Rousillon, producing his ring and revealing her pregnancy, to hear Bertram promise to love her dearly.
